AVR: Simple AVR Programmer

Overview

The project allows an easy transfer of hex programs to most Atmel AVR microcontrollers without the need for high cost and constraint time.

Explanation

Building the device in very short amount of time makes it more reliable than most other simple AVR programmers available. It consists of in-circuit serial programmer and small PCB with a DIP socket where a microcontroller can fit and be easily programmed. This programmer is considered as a standalone in-circuit programmer that can be used to conveniently program AVR microcontrollers without removing them from the target circuit.

By using common parts, the entire AVR programmer has been built which fits in the case of the serial connector. A 28-DIP AVR ATmega8 microcontroller is made to fit with the created PCB socket although a PCB socket can be built for any other AVR microcontroller since the socket PCB has very minimal number of components. This AVR programmer is compatible with a popular PonyProg software in which the status bar of the programming progress is shown.

The front side of the AVR programmer’s PCB contains the 9-pin female RS232 serial connector and a standard 6-pin ICSP connector on the other end of the cable.
